::종로 5가는 기독교의 메카이다. NCCK나 한기총, 한장총, 대한예수교장로회 통합총회 등 수 많은 기독교기관이 있다. 이곳은 민주화운동의 성지라고 불릴만큼 민주화운동의 관계기관이나 단체들이 많다. 이곳에서 서쪽으로 가면 서울YMCA 등 근대화를 앞당긴 단체들도 있다.

::역 동편은 동대문시장과, 서편은 광장시장과 가깝다. 동대문시장보다는 광장시장 때문에 찾는 사람이 많은 역이다. 광장시장의 빈대떡이나 육회, 마약김밥 같은 먹거리가 유명하나, 유명세를 타고부터는 가격이 많이 올랐기 때문에 과거의 소박한 분위기는 많이 사라졌다. 동대문 방향 거리에는 약국이 많이 있다.
